The descriptions of the Dorset countryside are gentle and detailed as Mead draws you into the story that she has woven around this unfortunate girl. The contrasts of life in those bygone days wrench your heart as Hannah struggles to survive. The story rises to a crescendo as the horrors and privations of unfortunates is laid bare with a raw and powerful description when layers of human dignity are laid bare. The grand finale sweeps gently down as Hannah finally finds peace far from home. There is scope her for another series here. A very moving story.
