Hello from North Wales!

Hi there!

It is a while since my last posting and apologies for that. No excuse really but I have been nose to the grindstone pulling my latest offering into shape. ORANGES: A Journey is almost 'cooked' and ready to roll. More on that in a few days.

As well as travel biographies, I write books on personal development and the importance of lifelong learning. Well, I practice what I preach ( I hope) and have taken part in two Webinars over the last few weeks. Organised and presented by the very charming,clever and inspirational  Judith Sharman of  Well-Tree-Learning - Business,Coaching and Consultancy they centre around her Solutions Orientated Highway for business. They reminded me of important points and in some ways related strongly to personal professional development with a focus on your business. Check out Judith's website. Worth a visit!

New book releases mean a fresh batch of marketing materials. So I changed my hat for that and we finalised the book jacket which could then be cascaded into everything else.

Following links from people I follow produced some interesting information. Not least the latest from Joel Friedlander who posts much information on the business of book design and publishing etc. Valuable. 
This week I have been introduced to a new group of ladies in the Costa Women social community and business networking group for women who are living in Spain  I was attracted to the group as I read the word 'Malaga' and my antennae started twitching. ORANGES - a fiction short story built on on a dream - is based in Portugal and Andalucia, southern Spain which is one of my favourite places to visit. I am looking forward to learning even  more on Andalucia.

OH and I have had a busy few weeks with Gold Wing Club meetings and have been up and down the country. Added to this have been family birthdays. March should be quieter and I hope to move on with the Long Leg of Italy and hopefully, Talking the Talk: Getting the Message Across but that might be wishful thinking!

Yet Another Employability Skill - Recording Your Progress and Development

Over the last three weeks, we have looked at a topic which is becoming more and more important. The place of lifelong learning in development and how it contributes to the development of your potential and you as a whole (Lifelong Learning:A View From the Coal Face). Part of this development is in making sure that you have the skills to become and stay employed (Skills For Employability Part One: Pre-Employment and Skills For Employability Part Two: Moving into Employment).

If you are just leaving school or college, your Careers advisor will have talked to you and given you lots of help and advice. The two Employability Skills  books include some of this but go beyond and focus on what you will find in employment and,to some degree, what is expected of you. A crucial part of remaining in employment and moving upwards or sideways is to have a personal and/or professional development plan where you can identify what you need to do, what you have learned and what you have learned from this learning.

Release Your Potential : Making Sense of Personal and Professional Development goes step-by-step through the whole process of this developmental activity.
Below is an extract.
"You must obtain the skills and knowledge needed for the future. This means constantly learning new processes as technology and economic needs change. This is your responsibility. If you are fortunate, your organisation will be investing in its workforce – as many do.
In other words, you are managing your life.

You will ask yourself:
  •   Where am I now?
  •   What are my strengths & weaknesses?
  •   Where do I want to be?
  •   What are the opportunities & threats?
  •   How do I get there? Which route do I take?
  •   What am I going to need? Development? Experience?
  •   Do I have what is needed?
  •  Opportunities – how will I get them?
  •   How am I going to get involved?
  •   Do I change my job?

  •   How to compile a simple Curriculum Vitae or C.V.

  •   What I need to know in the future.
  •   How I will learn what I need to know.
  •   What will stop me doing this?
Then we will move on to:
  •   How we decide which is the best way forward for you as an individual to learn.
  •   How we manage our time.
  •   How we manage our stress levels.
I will show you:
  •   How to draw up and complete a Personal Action Plan.
  •   Keep a record of what you have done and need to do to keep focused on your objectives.
  •   How to set aside time to look back on what you have done and see how far you have travelled.
In this way, as you take responsibility for your learning and development you will see yourself gradually improve and grow in confidence as you break down the barriers; climbing the ladder to where you want to be – and become a winner.
You must keep up to date and plan for the future.

You Got That Job? Your Springboard For the Future as You Move into Employment

Last week in Skills For Employability Part One: Pre-Employment, we looked at some of the skills you need in order to impress an employer so much that you will get the job that you have been chasing. Remember, you are a small fish in a large pool. The employability pool.
This week we will look at some of the skills you need once you move into employment.

Skills for Employability Part Two: Moving into Employment looks at the standards of behaviour and requirements of employers which include:  

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR): your rights and responsibilities as an employee, your employer's rights and responsibilities, an introduction to health and safety in the workplace, security, confidentiality, a self assessment checklist, ‘What do I need to do better / learn?’.Check your knowledge tasks & signposting to other learning programmes.

Important Aspects of Managing your Money: understanding your pay slip, tax and insurance, budgeting your money, income, and outgoings, check your knowledge and signposting to QCF units.

The Business Environment: what employers expect, working effectively in the workplace.Check your knowledge tasks & signposting to other learning programmes.

The Importance of Good Customer Service: ‘Who is my customer?’, internal and external customers, dealing with customer problems, improving customer service.Check your knowledge tasks & signposting to other learning programmes.

Healthy Living: eating well, exercise, sleep, personal hygiene. Check your knowledge tasks & signposting to other learning programmes.

Progression. ‘Where do I go from here?’ points you to the next stage of your journey.

Each chapter details the learning outcome (tell you what you will be learning). 

There is a series of tasks for you to complete along the way as well as some links to the Internet where you can explore the topics in more detail. This is to give you some variety in your learning journey and to check your progress. In turn, you will have a sense of achievement and will be able to see how far you have travelled.

At the end of each chapter, there is signposting to the Personal Life, Development/Employability Awards and Certificates, and/or Functional Skills. Therefore, if you read the topics carefully and complete all the tasks you could have some evidence to go towards this. This is called Accreditation of Prior Learning. No learning is ever wasted; learning can come from all sorts of situations both formal and informal, from work or from leisure activities.

  • An increased awareness of the standards of behaviour and requirements of employers.

  • School leavers; 16-18 yr old unemployed; returners to work; learners seeking a change of employment, wishing to enhance their prospects or, are between jobs.
  • Aimed at the home learner, someone who is unable to attend formal courses and as a resource for formal learning programmes
  • To fill gaps in underpinning knowledge and skills needed to ‘get on in life’.
